What is Cultural Heritage?

Cultural Heritage parameter is about the respect and restoration of Cultural Heritage inherited from past generations. This includes the protection and preservation of both formally and informally recognised sites, areas, landmarks, monuments and objects of cultural significance or historical value for future generations to benefit. Education is key to nurturing the respect and restoration of Cultural Heritage.

Cultural Heritage includes tangible culture such as buildings, monuments, museums, landmarks, books, artwork. It also includes intangible culture such as oral stories, poems, language and cultural knowledge.

Why is Cultural Heritage important?

Although there is economic value in tourists visiting heritage sites, Cultural Heritage buildings are at risk of being damaged due to the strains of global tourism. Millions of people from around are connected and traveling more than ever, large groups visits can contribute to the deterioration of old and fragile cultural buildings through touching, walking, breathing and sweat if numbers are not managed well.

It is recognised that that Cultural Heritage can be effective way of conserving resources and a reduction of carbon footprint. Conserving tangible culture such as heritage buildings reduces energy and water usage associated with demolition, waste generation from new construction. Moreover, the Celebration of Cultural Heritage contributes in affirming a person’s identity. It shapes and reflects your values and beliefs, contributing for you to confidently define your national identity.
